Inhabiting the Landscape
In a world marked by acceleration, my landscape painting practice serves as an act of grounding and deep contemplation. The stakes lie not in mere geographical representation, but in a desire to reveal the interconnectedness of elements: light, matter, and atmosphere. Every path, every riverbank, or cloud carried by the wind becomes a witness to this poetry of the living world.
I paint in oils, mostly alla prima, whether working on location or in the studio. Driven by a sense of urgency in the face of nature’s impermanence, I work with a swift and spontaneous brushstroke. This rapid execution is essential to capture a fleeting instant: the shimmering of light, a meteorological shift, the density of the air. Thus, the landscape on canvas is never static; it retains a sense of breath. It is lived, traversed, and felt.
My work is deeply rooted in the territory I inhabit. From my studio overlooking the Loire Gorges, I contemplate daily the harshness and grandeur of the Auvergne volcanic relief and the Mézenc massif. This assiduous observation leads me to work in series, tirelessly revisiting the same locations to capture their luminous and seasonal variations. It is from this constancy that my series Montagnes Éphémères (Ephemeral Mountains) was born—a pictorial research dedicated to the changing, monumental skies observed from my window.
This quest for the atmospheric event extends beyond Auvergne, particularly when facing the ocean, another inexhaustible source of luminous and kinetic variations. Whether dealing with the monumental verticality of a sky, the winding of a path, or the surf of the sea, my intention remains the same: to give a body to the ephemeral. Through the very matter and density of oil paint, I seek to reveal the poetic strength and profound identity of these spaces in perpetual mutation.
Biography
The landscape emerged as a natural calling when I was just fifteen, the same year I exhibited my first paintings at the Salon de l’École Française (Musée du Luxembourg, Paris). After graduating from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d’Art (ENSAAMA), I spent several years working in art restoration for the Conservation des Antiquités et Objets d’Art and the Monuments Historiques. This intimate, hands-on experience with classical masters deeply refined my technique. Based in Auvergne for the past thirty years and now a full-time professional artist, my work is held in numerous private collections across Europe, Asia, and primarily the United States.
